1.  Water Desalination Sites in Israel - Opportunities for US Environmental Companies

Due to fresh water shortage that Israel is forced to cope with for many years, the Government of Israel has initiated various emergency plans which resulted in positioning Israel as a pioneer in the area of desalination.

Israel is actively pursuing the target of becoming a state with an independent water supply by the year 2016, avoiding the need to rely solely on rainwater.  The ambitious objective set was to increase the volume of water desalinated to at least 750 million cubic meters (mcm) per year. This target will be attained thanks to many technologies: Desalination, recycling, and advanced water management systems. Throughout most of the world these water production methods have yet to be applied, and Israel, which constitutes only small fraction of the global water consumption, has become a strong symbol for technology-based water independence.  Following is a brief a look at Israel's intensive development and unique Water Desalination sites. An emerging industry that can provide many business opportunities for US Environmental Companies, as well as municipalities and local governments seeking to expand internationally in this rapidly growing market arena.

Presently, there are five water desalination sites in Israel, three of which are known as the leading sites in the world: Ashkelon (VID); Hadera (H2ID) and Palmachim (Via Maris)

The Ashkelon facility of reverse osmosis (membrane processes), is the biggest and most advanced of its kind in the world. This facility has been operational since 2005 and supplies over 108 million cubic meters of water (~ 15% of current domestic consumption). The site, developed by Israel's IDE Technologies Ltd. (www.ide-tech.com produces the finest quality of fresh water of its kind and won global prizes and recognitions for "exceptional achievements" and   "Global Desalination Plant of the Year".

The Hadera Desalination Facility located in the center of Israel, is the latest and largest site opened last year. Utilizing reverse osmosis technology the plant was originally designed to produce 127 mcm of high quality water per year, close to 20% of the annual household use, the site is also considered a financial success.   The $425 million raised from European banks is showing fast return on the investment and is now being expanded to double its production to 275,000 mcm - the largest reverse-osmosis plant in the world!

Another pioneering desalination site includes the Palmachim Plant, south of Tel-Aviv, with annual capacity of 54 mcm and the option to grow to 70 mcm. Curently there are two other major sites built on the Mediterranean – one by the city of Ashdod with 100 mcm capacity and in Sorek with 150 mcm. Both sites are planned to be inaugurated by 2013.

This massive build-up of Desalination plants in Israel is truly exceptional. Starting only about 6 years ago, this national endeavor is growing rapidly, creating many industry opportunities and positioning Israel at the forefront of the industry.

To take advantage of these opportunities, US companies are invited to attend WATEC 2011 Bi-Annual International Conference which will be held from November 15 to 17, 2011 in Tel Aviv. Focused on water technologies, renewable energy and environmental control, this Conference is considered one of the largest of its kind in the EMEA region.

2.  Israel: A World of Opportunities Water/Waste Management & Environmental Companies

Israel, a global leader in water and wastewater management, offers an abundance of business opportunities around this important natural resource. Forced to cope with water scarcity for many years, Israel plans to have an independent water supply by 2015. This will be accomplished through the utilization of water source technologies such as desalinization installations, water recycling, and advanced water management systems.

Israel is noted for its water independence because it embraced and pioneered emerging technologies to address its historic fresh water scarcity – a country with virtually no rainfall eight months out of the year. Israel’s innovative accomplishments were recognized at the Cleantech Forum Conference held in San Francisco 2011 in a panel discussion entitled "How can we learn from the Israeli experience in the water domain."

Sales of water technologies in Israel have grown from $800M to $2.2 Billion in the past 5 year. This rapid increase is expected to continue. By 2030 the world's population will demand 50% more fresh water than is currently consumed. Without technology, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to supply the world’s water demand for water. The estimated annual cost of desalination to produce the additional demand in 2030 is 1.2 trillion dollars.

Israel, regarded as a nexus of world-class expertise in the water field, is home to approximately 250 companies addressing desalination, water treatment and reclamation, water safety, and agricultural water consumption via drip irrigation - an Israeli innovation.

Prominent Israeli water developments include:

• Several of the world's largest RO desalination plants are located in Israel (Ashkelon and Hadera)

• World leadership in using recycled water (about 75% of agricultural consumption)

• One of the world's most advanced systems of wastewater treatment and decontamination

• Unique integrative management of varied water sources

• Construction, operation and maintenance of the one-of-the-kind national water carrier

The water market is managed primarily by companies/organizations controlled by federal or local governments. Establishing cooperative ventures with governments, water companies and international corporations is viewed as a promising approach to meeting future water demands. An example of such cooperation is between the city of Akron, Ohio and Mei-Netanya, an Israeli water company. This collaboration led to the sharing of technologies and best practices. Other water companies and municipalities in Israel are looking for similar partnerships with the US.

WATEC 2011 Bi-Annual International Conference will be held from November 15 to 17, 2011 in Tel Aviv. Focused on water technologies, renewable energy and environmental control, this Conference is considered one of the largest of its kind in the EMEA region. Topics will include: advanced water solutions, water & wastewater management, desalination, water saving solutions, leakage control, water security, as well as renewable energy sectors such as solar and wind energy, thermal and energy conservation. Other environmental technologies presented includes: air pollution monitoring & control, ecological agriculture, treatment and management of hazardous materials, waste recycling and recovery, wastewater treatment, purification and reclamation, green building and environmental education. For additional information on doing business in Israel in the areas of Water/Wastewater Management, environmental solutions and alternative energies.

3.  Israel Opportunities for Housing & Construction Materials and Products Companies

Israel is facing a potential boost in housing development and related construction as a result of great pressure and nationwide protests related to housing shortages and soaring cost (including rental) of houses and apartments, and the overall average cost of living. For a brief review on the Country's construction and housing stratus please see: http://duns100.dundb.co.il/ts.cgi?tsscript=scriae&category=12

The Government is about to release government-owned land for construction of housing. The Ministry of Construction and Housing along with Israel Land Administration are planning to double or more new constructions from about 26,000 housing units since the start of 2011 to over 60, 000 in 2012 in efforts to make prices decline and reduce the high demand. Housing renovation under various government laws (I.e. TAMA 38 law for renovating old and earthquake prone building) is also increasing at a rapid pace.

We believe that all this represent some opportunities for Companies providing building products, floor tile covering and more to enter the local market.   The construction industry in Israel includes over 200,000 employees employed by the 10,000 registered building contractors by law.

Many urban renewal projects are taking place around the country, including demolishing of old buildings and rebuilding new taller buildings, higher quality and larger size.

Companies that are interested should connect with leading construction companies like:
